Shoulder Surgery Specialists in Orange County

Dr. Cheng,

Aaron from Westminster. I just came out of shoulder surgery a few weeks ago and I'm
in so much pain. I can't move my shoulder and it's difficult to sleep at night. I want to
know if there's anything I can do to sleep better and are there exercises that can make
my shoulder stronger. What else can I do to recover from this shoulder surgery?

Aaron,

What you're going through is pretty common for post shoulder surgery pain. You're going
to be stiff and swollen for a while. At this point, exercising is not recommended because
you have to let the shoulder heal first. Trying to get back too fast from a shoulder surgery is
very dangerous because it can compromise the surgery. Focus more on range of motion
now and when you get the ok from your surgeon, then you can start exercising.  If you're
working with a physical therapist, deep-tissue massage to the surrounding tissues will
help you sleep better and reduce the pain.  Shoulder surgery is a very complex surgery so
take caution when you're going through rehab. If you have any more questions regarding
shoulder surgery or post shoulder surgical care, give us a call.  We see quite a few of
these everyday.

Dr. Cheng,

Henry from Orange. My father tore his rotator cuff a few weeks ago and he's scheduled
for shoulder surgery next month. His range of motion is horrible and he can't use that
arm at all. I wonder if there's anything we can do now to prepare him for his shoulder
surgery next month. Would massage or stretching exercises help?

Henry,

If he's scheduled for shoulder surgery in a month, there's really not much you can do at
this point. Massage and stretching would help alleviate some of the discomfort he has
now but it's not going to change the prognosis of the shoulder surgery. Keep in mind that
he's going to be immobilized for at least 6-8 weeks after his surgery so his shoulder is
going to be stiff regardless of what you do now. One thing that is helpful is deep-tissue
massage to the neck because when your shoulder is out, your neck muscles take over
that function. Relaxing the neck muscles help a lot of my shoulder surgery patients sleep
better at night and most report of less pain.
