Knee Replacement Surgery Specialists in Orange County

Dr. Cheng,

Anthony from Fullerton. I hear that after knee replacement surgery, the rehab is painful
and sometime your knee will not bend like it did before. I'm 64 years old and I want to
make sure I will be able to bend my knee after this new knee replacement. Can you tell
me more about knee replacement surgery?

Anthony,

When you go through a knee replacement surgery, you're going to have swelling, stiffness,
pain, and loss range of motion, that's normal. You will be hospitalized for about 3-5 days
before you are discharge from the hospital.  Once you are home, you will have a therapist
come to your home and physical therapy will be started right away.  After a few weeks at
home, you will be referred to an outpatient physical therapy clinic to finish your knee
rehabilitation.

From what I have seen with my patients after knee replacement surgery, the first week is
very uncomfortable but by the second and third week, most are doing pretty well. So give it
some time. As far as being able to bend it after surgery, of course you will.

What most people don't realize is that knee replacement surgery takes a lot longer to heal
than what you would expect. Most of what I have seen is about 6 to 9 months before you
actually feel "normal" again. However, having said that, it doesn't mean you have to be in
excruciating pain everyday. There are a lot of things you can do for your new knee to make
it more comfortable.

One of the things we do is use acupressure to relax the deeper knee muscles. Once the
muscles are relax, we work on the joints that are stiff, putting them on slack to relax them
and alleviate any tensions in there. We then take you through a series of stabilizing
exercises to help strengthen the knee and hip muscles so you won't have to compensate
so much with your other knee. That's usually what causes the tightness and stiffness in
your other knee after knee replacement surgery.

We help knee surgery patients all the time and it's amazing what the right treatment can do
for you. If you feel you would be more comfortable talking to one of us, please give us a call
and we'll be more than happy to go over all your questions regarding your knee surgery.
