Hip Replacement Surgery Specialists in Orange County

Dr. Cheng,

Joanne from Fullerton. I'm scheduled for a total hip replacement surgery in a month or
so. My surgeon wants me to do physical therapy but I'm not sure how that will help me
if I'm going to have hip replacement surgery anyway. Will physical therapy help me?
What can I expect from this surgery?

When you go through a hip replacement surgery, you're going to have swelling, stiffness,
pain, and loss range of motion. You will be hospitalized for about 3-5 days before you are
discharge from the hospital.  Once you are home, you will have a therapist come to your
home and physical therapy will be started right away.  After a few weeks at home, you will
be referred to an outpatient physical therapy clinic to finish your hip rehabilitation.

From what I have seen with my patients after hip replacement surgery, the first week is
very uncomfortable but by the second and third week, most are doing pretty well. So give it
some time.

What most people don't realize is that hip replacement surgery takes a lot longer to heal
than what you would expect. Most of what I have seen is about 6 to 9 months before you
actually feel "normal" again. However, having said that, it doesn't mean you have to be in
excruciating pain everyday. There are a lot of things you can do for your new hip to make it
more comfortable.

One of the things we do is use acupressure to relax the deeper hip muscles. Once the
muscles are relax, we work on the joints that are stiff, putting them on slack to relax them
and alleviate any tensions in there. We then take you through a series of stabilizing
exercises to help strengthen the hip muscles so you won't have to compensate so much
with your other hip. That's usually what causes the tightness and stiffness in your other hip
after hip replacement surgery.

We help hip surgery patients all the time and it's amazing what the right treatment can do
for you. If you feel you would be more comfortable talking to one of us, please give us a call
and we'll be more than happy to go over all your questions regarding your hip surgery.
