Elbow Surgery Specialists in Orange County

Dr. Cheng,

Alice here from Orange. I recently had elbow surgery from a fall. After my elbow
surgery, I can't seem to straighten out my arm very well. I'm wearing a brace that puts
pressure on the elbow to straighten it out more but it hurts a lot. Is there anything else I
can do beside wear this elbow brace?

Alice,

When you go through an elbow surgery, you're going to have swelling, stiffness, pain, and
loss range of motion. The reason why you have the brace on is to continuously stretch your
elbow out so you won't heal contracted (bent elbow).  From what I have seen with my
patients after elbow surgery, the first week is very uncomfortable but by the second and
third week, most are used to the brace. So give it some time.

What most people don't realize is that elbow surgery takes a lot longer to heal than what
you would expect. Most of what I have seen is about 4 to 6 months before you actually feel
"normal" again. However, having said that, it doesn't mean you have to be in excruciating
pain everyday. There are a lot of things you can do for your elbow to make it more
comfortable.

One of the things we do is use acupressure to relax the deeper arm muscles. Once the
muscles are relax, we work on the joints that are stiff, putting them on slack to relax them
and alleviate any tensions in there. We then take you through a series of stabilizing
exercises to help strengthen the forearm muscles so you won't have to compensate so
much with your shoulder. That's usually what causes the tightness and stiffness in your
shoulder after elbow surgery.

We help elbow surgery patients all the time and it's amazing what the right treatment can
do for you. If you feel you would be more comfortable talking to one of us, please give us a
call and we'll be more than happy to go over all your questions regarding your elbow
surgery.
