Carpal Tunnel Specialists in Orange County

Dr. Cheng,

I'm in Orange County. I work on the computer 8 to 10 hours a day and I'm noticing a lot
of pain and tingling in my hands. My doctor told me it's carpal tunnel and I should do
some exercises for it. I have never heard of carpal tunnel exercises but I'm wondering
if that would work at all. Can you tell me how you would treat my carpal tunnel?

Margaret,

Just because you have tingling and pain in your hands DOES NOT mean you have carpal
tunnel. It could be from your neck, shoulder, elbow or vascular in nature. So be careful not
to jump on carpal tunnel as the diagnosis.

I have run into many cases where the diagnosis is carpal tunnel but it turned out to be a
neck or shoulder problem.

Carpal tunnel is basically pinching or compression of the median nerve in your hand. It
runs from your neck to your fingers. Carpal tunnel is debilitating because it can affect your
life in so many ways. From your job to recreation, carpal tunnel is not something you get
and it goes away in 2 weeks. It's here to stay if you don't know what to do.

To answer your question, strengthening is really not the best treatment option for carpal
tunnel. The reason is that carpal tunnel patients are not weak. But they are tight and
tender, especially in their forearm and shoulder muscles.  Because of this, our carpal
tunnel program stresses both shoulder and wrist flexibility. We also use acupressure and
deep tissue massage to relieve the tightness in the forearm muscles. We have found this
approach to be more effective than strength training for carpal tunnel.

I hope this has helped. Please call if you have more questions about Carpal Tunnel.
