Ankle Pain and Sprain Specialists in Orange County
I'm in Orange. I run a lot and now I'm beginning to get ankle pain every time I run. It only
hurts if I run, not walk. I notice that my ankle pain is also getting more frequent
compared to last year. Can you tell me more about ankle pain?
Dean, Orange - Orange County
Your ankle pain is probably caused by tendonitis (swollen overused tendons and
muscles) in your ankle. Ankle pain is pretty hard to treat because we use it so much. I'm
assuming your pain didn't start out hurting all the time but now it's getting more frequent
Keep in mind that if you continue to ignore it by bracing it or just using ice and heat, it's
going to get worse before it gets better. You might have some pain free periods but your
ankle pain will likely return. Brace, ice, and heat take care of the symptoms, but not the
problem causing your ankle pain.
Ankle pain rarely goes away by themselves, you might need help if it has been more than
a month. What you're describing sounds like a mild problem but it can get out of hand real
fast, so be careful. Think of it this way, if you are taping something down and a corner
starts to come up, you have to press it back down fast or else the whole piece will come
off. Your ankle pain acts the same way. Take care of it now before it gets more serious.
At our clinics, we treat ankle pain through acupressure, deep tissue massage, stretching,
and exercises to reduce the pain and swelling. We rarely use heat, ice, ultrasound, or
electrical stimulation. We have found that our treatment approach is much more effective
than using modalities for ankle pain.
